Social media forms part of our daily lives

THE POWER OF SOCIAL MEDIA

Don’t you think social media is the best? Well!!! I personally think it’s powerful. We no longer have to wait for the news on SABC or to read newspapers to get information. It makes our lives very easy because we can access information at a low cost.

Organizations can easily get feedback from their customers. Customers can share interesting information on social networking sites like facebook, tweeter and etc. They can retweet about what they feel is informative and there’s a need that people should hear it.  By them sharing information and retweeting pictures and videos of organizations, they create publicity for those companies. Opinion leaders or influencers retweet about information they think it’s interesting and therefore create publicity for brands. That’s how powerful social media is.

Social media does not only help businesses but also helps us to keep in touch with our colleagues, friends and families. Nowadays we can easily access information around the world. It makes us feel connected to one another and again makes us feel like we are closer to each other.  I mean we hear about incidents that happen abroad everyday on our timelines. How cool is that? Social media makes us feel like china is just next door.

Social media strengthens relationships. People no longer feel lonely when their partners are away from them because they get to text them whenever they can. It does not only strengthen the relationships of friends but relationships between organizations and their customers. Organizations can easily find out what their customers want and what they don’t want. Customers help organizations by placing their complaints and by telling companies where they need to improve.

THE FUTURE OF JOURNALISM IS UNCERTAIN

Journalist no longer publish news as fresh news but rather old ones. They publish what we already know. We don’t only retweet or share information about what we do and where we are but also break news on social media. Although social media gives us all the news we need to hear, we still need journalist. Remember not all of us are always online or are interested in social media. Journalist are still useful but that doesn’t guarantee that their future is certain.

IT’S NOT YET OVER FOR JOURNALISM

Though things re like that, social media creates more opportunities for journalist to gather more information quickly. Social media is not really threatening journalism because it has given birth to the networked journalism. Networked journalism means a synthesis of traditional news journalism and the emerging forms of participating media enabled by web 2.0 technologies such as mobile phones, email, websites, blogs and social networks.

To what extent do you think Public relations and Advertising differ? Most people think there’s a thin line between the two, in an actual fact advertising is the opposite of public relations and vice versa. With advertising you get full control over the content, the word choice and format while in public relations the media is in charge of the content, the word choice, the size and format. In advertising you have to pay for your message to be placed in communication channels whereas with public relations you don’t pay due to the newsworthiness of the report. Therefore advertising is really effective.

Advertising helps one in terms of name recognition and brand awareness. Before you become aware of a brand, you need to recognize it therefore recognition plays a pivotal role in brand awareness.  Advertising promotes organizations and their products.  Advertising is effective because the communication channels used such as Television and Radio make brands popular by repeating those brands through advertisements constantly.   We see the same adverts each and every day which make us not to forget but remember to buy the products.
An advertisement makes you aware of new products that come into the market. It tells us information about the name of the product, reasons why people should buy it. It informs about where to get the product and its prices.

PUBLIC RELATIONS AND ADVERTISING ARE INTERDEPENDENT

It has been said that oil and water differs a lot to an extent that they don’t mix when put together in one bottle.  However with Advertising and Public relations it’s different. Public relations utilizes third-party testimonials where other individuals are talking about you. In advertising, you are speaking about yourself. Although the two differs they can be used together effectively and complement each other.

Public relations is the component of marketing that shapes and upholds the consciousness or reputation of a business and it does so at no cost. Organizations uses public relations to be build their image. Public relations reaches a much larger audiences.

PUBLIC RELATIONS IN ADVERTISING

The effectiveness of advertising goes to a certain level whereas the use of advertising in public relations goes a long way. Public Relations strengthens the relationships in advertising. There will be no Public Relations without advertising therefore at some point the two needs each other. For instance when the use of advertising messes up the use of Public relations can clean up the damages done by advertising.
